How to Get Out of a Style Rut

Turn a Style Rut into a Style Strut

There may come a time in your life when you get bored of the same old look and you feel like a change is necessary. Change is good! It gives you a chance to experiment with your style and try out new things. Whether you’re experiencing an early twenties style overhaul or mid-life crisis, here are some ways to get out your style rut for a better you:

Declutter Your Wardrobe

One of the biggest hindrances when you’re trying to change your style is not wanting to get rid of your old clothes. Yes, the attachment is real. However, there are bound to be pieces in your wardrobe that you hardly wear which can surely be put to better use; perhaps donated to charity if they’re good quality. Ask yourself: “How often do I wear this? Will it come back in style? Can it be replaced?” Be ruthless!

Change Your Style

In order to analyze what you’d like to alter about your style, you need to assess the items you’ve got lying around. Once you’ve organized your wardrobe, you’ll have a better understanding of what you own. Have you noticed any buying habits? For example, maybe you’ve bought one style of clothing more than most. If you spot that you wear more t-shirts, hoodies, sports luxe wear and joggers, then try to switch things up by buying shirts, skirts, trousers and blazers. Alternatively, if you find you always have dressier going-out clothes but never have anything for dress down days, then invest in some comfy clothing. Swap your cotton briefs for lace luxury lingerie, and your plain black socks for cute patterned socks. Small changes can make all the difference in your overall aesthetic.

Try Out New Colours

If you’re a dressed in black head-to-toe kind of girl, then maybe it’s time for a change. Black is a fabulous colour for coordinating with most outfits, and of course there’s nothing wrong with wearing all black occasionally. By adding a few coloured pieces to your wardrobe you can completely change the way you dress. Try mixing things up with neutrals or greys if you aren’t keen on bright colours or invest in some patterned tops. Adding some light pastel colours to your wardrobe is also a great idea, as they rarely go out of fashion, allowing you to create versatile looks year-round.

Experiment with Hairstyles

We feel comfortable with what we know, but why not take a leap of faith and step out of your comfort zone? Take a break from your signature hairstyle and try something new. If you’ve got naturally straight hair, then wear it curly for a change. Or if you’ve got curly hair, then straighten it for a whole new you. If you’d rather embrace your natural hair, then check out YouTube tutorials relevant to your hair type for amazing styles like box braids or sleek buns. You could also dye your hair a new colour if you’re feeling bold.

If the thought of doing your hair every morning before work fills you with dread, then save the effort for the weekends. You’ll find you get better with practice anyway.

Get A Piercing

Ok, you don’t need to do anything too extreme. If you feel like getting a new piercing, then go for it! It’s a great idea if you’re after a complete change and if you’ve never had your ears pierced then this could be a good place to start. On the other hand, you could play it safe with fake piercings if you aren’t ready for that kind of commitment. There are some surprisingly realistic options available that look really pretty, including lip rings, nose rings and ear studs.

The best way to get out of a style rut is to change your attitude. So, the next time you’re contemplating whether that glamorous top will suit you – try it on! Be bolder and braver with your fashion choices. What’s the worst that could happen? If you try it on and it doesn’t look great, then don’t buy it. When you start taking more risks with your style, you’ll surprise yourself with what suits you.
